Find Help, Find Hope!

June 2019

June’s volunteer of the month is Sam Walinsky! Sam is one of our great program volunteers. He is an amazing presenter, teacher, and support group facilitator who has been with NAMI MC since 2008!

What motivated you to start volunteering at NAMI MC?

I was motivated to begin volunteering with NAMI MC by the tremendous growth I realized as the result of doing so for the US
Department of Veterans Affairs. I found that experience to be incredibly satisfying, as well as virtually unbelievably valuable in terms of enhancing my own self esteem. While serving in this capacity, I learned about NAMI  and became increasingly motivated to learn  about the latter’s programs. Having done so, I quickly decided NAMI MC was for me. I began giving to the latter organization by facilitating Connections trauma recovery groups, and soon began increasing the scope of my contributions. I have no doubt that my
efforts in this regard have been more beneficial to my quest for recovery than anything else I could have done.

What’s your favorite part about volunteering with NAMI MC?

The long term relationships developed with many of our consumers enable we who help them to share in the beauty of the magnificent growth many of our “consumers” achieve.

How has volunteering at NAMI MC impacted your life?

Volunteering at NAMI MC has had a profoundly beneficial impact on my life. Indeed, I attribute my NAMI MC-related activities as being the major contributing factor toward my largely successful effort to gain wellness.

Do you have any advice or insight for those interested in volunteering with NAMI MC?

Call our Director of Programs (301-949-5282) who will be happy to discuss with you the next best step.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I love to laugh and readily take advantage of any opportunities to do so respectfully and considerately.

When you’re not volunteering, what do you like to do for fun?

I love working out, watching sporting events, theater and spending time with friends and family. But most of all, I LOVE being with our wonderful grandchildren.
