Find Help, Find Hope!

April 2019

April 2019 Volunteer of the Month!

What motivated you to start volunteering at NAMI MC?
NAMI has helped us and our family, and we wanted to help others.

How long have you volunteered with NAMI MC?
In May of 2016, we completed the Family to Family (F2F) Instructor course. In the summer of 2017, our life settled down enough to lead our first F2F course, and our volunteering really began.

What’s your favorite part about volunteering with NAMI MC?
It’s great to see how the F2F classes truly help families in great distress. We also enjoy the NAMIWalks, the Heroes Celebration and other activities where we spend time with people that understand and share our experiences. We appreciate the opportunity to inspire other people to become involved with NAMI, and advocate for those with mental illness and their loved ones.

How has volunteering at NAMI MC impacted your life?
We have learned a great deal from the members of our F2F classes. The support of NAMI members and staff has been comforting over the years. It’s wonderful to have a connection with people that understand our journey. It helps us to process what we’ve been through, so that we can completely heal.

Do you have any advice or insight for those interested in volunteering with NAMI MC?
NAMI is very frugal with its limited funds. Volunteers are NAMI’s biggest asset. Volunteers are essential for NAMI programs to be successful. We strongly recommend volunteering for NAMI. You can ensure that NAMI’s programs continue to be successful and touch many lives. Please get involved. You’ll get to know people in the organization. It is a lot of fun and great support.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
We both grew up in Montgomery County. We regularly see our friends from high school and even from grade school.

When you’re not volunteering, what do you like to do for fun?
Damian is a volunteer diver at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Claire enjoys being a reading teacher and is active at our church. We both enjoy time with our children, grandchildren and other family members. We also like to travel and entertain.
