NAMI MC’s Volunteer of the Month of February is Yoko Makembe. Yoko has been volunteering with NAMI MC for five years and has taken on many different roles as a volunteer. Yoko has been a trained facilitator of our Connections Support Groups. He also is a young adult presenter for our Ending the Silence presentation, which takes place in middle schools and high schools throughout the county. NAMI MC always appreciates Yoko’s willingness to help out, even if it’s a last minute request. We are so grateful for all of Yoko’s contributions to NAMI MC. Read more below to learn more about Yoko!
What motivated you to start volunteering at NAMI MC?
I moved to Silver Spring, MD in 2013. I felt that volunteering for NAMI Montgomery County would be a great way to learn about my community and meet people in my new environment.
How long have you volunteered with NAMI MC?
I have been a NAMI Montgomery County volunteer for 5 years.
What’s your favorite part about volunteering with NAMI MC?
My favorite part about volunteering for NAMI Montgomery County is facilitating support groups. I enjoy sharing what I have learned from my experiences to help others. I admire the courage people have to come forth and share their challenges.
How has volunteering at NAMI MC impacted your life?
My life has been impacted by NAMI Montgomery County in many ways. The most significant way it has helped me is helping me keep relationships with people. NAMI MC kept me from isolating myself by giving me activities to do with others.
Do you have any advice or insight for those interested in volunteering with NAMI MC?
My advice to people interested in volunteering with NAMI Montgomery County is to recognize that NAMI MC is a dynamic organization with very hard working staff and volunteers. It is always improving, because everyone does their best.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
My name was given to me by my mother, Josephine Kida, who has been an angel in my recovery. “Thank you for being there for me Mom!”
When you’re not volunteering, what do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not volunteering I enjoy dancing too music with my 4-year old niece, Brooklyn Margaret Lindo.
